About Bernice Udelle Friedland

Bernice Udelle Friedland was born in 1935. Her collegiate journey started with a BS in Social Administration from The Ohio State University in 1956. After starting a family, she continued her education, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Education from Frostburg State College in 1969. She took most of the classes at night, while continuing to work and raise a family during the day. At the age of 37, Udelle was awarded a Doctorate in Education in 1972 from West Virginia University. During her lifetime, she worked as a social worker, teacher, guidance counselor and psychologist, often carrying two or three jobs at once. She was the backbone of our family, our protector and hero. She lost a brave battle to cancer in 1988, maintaining her dignity and fighting to the end. As a cherished family member, advisor and mentor, Udelle is dearly missed to this day. Our family is honored to name this scholarship in her memory, since she was committed to the betterment of herself and others through education.
